Umbilical Granuloma

Diagnosis

  • Definition: Benign granulation tissue at the umbilicus post-stump separation

  • Features: Small, moist, pink/red nodule ± clear/serous discharge

  • Key Differential: Umbilical polyp (requires referral)

Management

  • First-line:

    • Salt application: Pinch of table salt BD, leave 30 min, rinse (improves in ~1 week)

    • Cauterisation: Silver nitrate weekly; protect surrounding skin with petroleum jelly

  • Persistent/Large:

    • Double ligature with sterile thread

    • Refer if unresolved or complicated

Additional Measures

  • Expose to air for drying

  • Educate caregivers: Benign, self-limiting

Notes

  • Avoid antiseptics/antibiotics unless infected

  • Reassess if unresolved after 2–3 weeks (e.g., polyp, urachal remnant)

  • Reassure parents: Typically resolves without significant intervention
