LP Headache



Risk Reduction

  • Needle bevel parallel to dural fibres

  • Use atraumatic needle (smallest gauge possible, 22G minimum)

  • Replace stylet before withdrawing needle

  • Minimise attempts; operator experience is key


Ineffective in Preventing LP Headache

  • CSF volume removed

  • Increased fluid intake

  • Bed rest duration

  • LP position (lying vs sitting)


Key Features

  • Onset: Within 3 days (can occur up to 12 days post-LP)

  • Duration: Usually resolves within 1 week; may require an epidural blood patch

  • Symptoms:

    • Postural headache (worse standing, improves lying flat)

    • Tinnitus, dizziness, neck stiffness, vision changes

    • Possible nausea, photophobia
