LP Headache
Risk Reduction
Needle bevel parallel to dural fibres
Use atraumatic needle (smallest gauge possible, 22G minimum)
Replace stylet before withdrawing needle
Minimise attempts; operator experience is key
Ineffective in Preventing LP Headache
CSF volume removed
Increased fluid intake
Bed rest duration
LP position (lying vs sitting)
Key Features
Onset: Within 3 days (can occur up to 12 days post-LP)
Duration: Usually resolves within 1 week; may require an epidural blood patch
Symptoms:
Postural headache (worse standing, improves lying flat)
Tinnitus, dizziness, neck stiffness, vision changes
Possible nausea, photophobia
